According to the Washington Multifamily Housing Association, Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant is planning an attempt to pressure state government representatives on rent control by asking her supporters to sign a petition in favor of rent control. She intends to approve the plea in her Sustainability and Renter's Rights Committee before moving it to the full council. If the state voted to allow local rent control in the future, it would immediately become effective. WMHA reports that the Seattle ordinance, if adopted, could be used to push similar legislation in cities around the Puget Sound Region. Once the actual language of an ordinance is prepared, our office will make it available. Sawant promotes her messaging on the City's website.
